CHINA BECOMING COMMUNIST
China became Communist with the start of the Communist movement in 1949. The leader of the Communist movement was Mao Zedong. Mao’s main enemy was the Nationalists led by Jiang Jieshi. The Long March was a journey of about six thousand miles, by about one hundred thousand Chinese Communists when they were forced out of their base in Kiangsi in southeast China. They made their way to Shensi in northwest China. It was a long journey and only about eight thousand people survived through it.
At the end of World War II in 1946 the Chinese Communist Party and the Kuomintang continued to go to war against each other. The KMT eventually was defeated and forced to leave China. On October 1, 1949 Mao Zedong proclaimed the establishment of the People's Republic of China. Chiang Kai-shek and the defeated nationalists flee to Taiwan by late in year. In 1950, Mao passed the Agrarian Reform Law. Officials went around China to help with land reforms. All of the animals, machinery and land were given to the peasants, this gave fear to any landlords safety.
Mao Zedong came up with the great leap forward in 1958 to expand the success of the first five year plan. They created about 26,000 communes, collective farm where a lot of people work and live together.15,00o acres and supported over 25,000 people. The people owned nothing. The great leap forward was more of a large step backward. It ended in 1961 after crops failed and caused a famine that killed about 20 million people. China is still communist today but is defined as a form of government where the very way of life of an individual living in such a communist state. This means common dwelling, schools, food, medical care and transportation but everything is owned by the state and there is no such thing as private property or private ownership.
