Korean War
Map of China showing where the 38th Parallel split North and South Korea.
After World War Two Korea was divided into two, north of the 38th parallel. North Korea wanted communist and South Korea wanted non-communist, they did not agree on political and economic decisions so they slit into two. On June 25, 1950, North Koreans swept across the 38th parallel in a surprise attack on South Korea. Days after North Korean troops had moved far into South Korea. Truman’s policy of containment was being tested and Truman helped South Korea resist communism.
The Soviet Union did not want to support the North Koreans so they supplied them with tanks, airplanes and money to help to try and take over the peninsula. On the other hand the United States were the aid to the South Koreans. On September 1950, the North Koreans pushed to control the entire Korean peninsula except for a tiny area around Pusan in the far southeast. After this broke out China was threatened and sent 300,000 troops into North Korea. The Three major battles of the Korean War were Pusan Perimeter, Inchon and the Chosin Reservoir. On June 25, 1950, North Korea launched a surprise attack on South Korea across the 38th parallel. The North Korean army drove South Korean down the peninsula. On September 15, US Marines made a surprise attack well behind North Korean lines. The Invasion of Inchon allowed the allied troops to break out of the Pusan Perimeter, and begin to push the North Koreans back into their own country. This turned the Korean War around.
On July, 1953 the United Nation forces and North Korea signed a cease-fire agreement. The border between the two Koreas was set near the 38th parallel. Which is almost where it was prior to the war. Four million soldiers and civilians had died throughout the war. Today Korea is still split between North and South Korea. North Korea has a Communist Dictator and they have developed nuclear weapons but have economic problems. South Korea is a democratic constitution and over the years have established free elections.
